My name is Derek Funyak, and I created Leadership Foundations for one simple reason:
I believe better leadership builds better firefighters, stronger organizations, and healthier cultures.
Over the years, I've watched departments struggle with the same problems. Communication breaks down. Trust disappears. People stop feeling valued. New officers are promoted because they're good firefighters, but no one ever teaches them how to lead people.
Eventually I realized something.
Leadership isn't something we're born knowing. It's something we learn, practice, and improve every single day.
That's why I built this course.
Before you continue, though, I think you deserve to know exactly who I am.
I'm a volunteer firefighter and Deputy Chief. I haven't spent my career working for a large metropolitan department, and I won't pretend that my experiences are identical to those who have.
What I can tell you is this:
I've spent years leading people, making difficult decisions, building teams, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, and constantly searching for better ways to help others succeed.
Those experiences taught me something that I believe applies to every organization, regardless of size, location, or staffing model.
Leadership isn't measured by call volume.
It isn't measured by rank.
It isn't measured by whether you receive a paycheck.
It's measured by the trust you build, the example you set, the consistency of your actions, and the leaders you develop behind you.
Everything you'll find in Leadership Foundations comes from real experiences. Some of the lessons were learned through success. Others came from failure, difficult conversations, organizational challenges, and moments that forced me to become a better leader.
I don't claim to have all the answers.
In fact, I hope I never do.
The day we believe we've learned everything is the day we stop growing.
My goal isn't to tell you that my way is the only way.
My goal is to share what I've learned, challenge the way you think about leadership, and give you practical ideas you can adapt to your own organization.
Whether you serve in a volunteer department, a combination department, or a career department, we all face the same responsibility.
People are counting on us.
Not just on emergency scenes, but every day we put on the uniform.
